Cheered on by a large, loud home-field crowd, Verona High School boys soccer put every ounce of energy into three hours of play and two rounds of penalty kicks. In the end, Verona was just one penalty kick short, and the N2G1 semifinals went to Glen Ridge on Monday night.

Andrew Della Ferra got Verona on the scoreboard first with a penalty kick. Glen Ridge’s Jack Robertson and Nathan Latifi responded with goals of their own before Nick Handler tied the score, with an assist by Ray Chesney. The teams then battled, scoreless, through two overtime periods. In the penalty kick phase, Glen Ridge outshot Verona 9-8. Boys soccer ended its 2021 season with a 9-7-2 record.

Last Friday, VHS girls soccer was outscored by New Providence 2-0 in the quarterfinal of its playoffs. Verona girls were the #8 seed in N2G1 and they defeated #9 seed Roselle Park 10-0 in the opening round. The team ended its season 11-6.
