Whether you are playing, watching or coaching an outdoor sport in Verona, you can now put away your pandemic mask: Today, Gov. Phil Murphy lifted the mask mandate for outdoor sports. The new rule applies to youth sports and high school athletics, whether or not you can maintain six feet of distance from others and regardless of your vaccination status.

“The Verona Public Schools has consulted with the Montclair Department of Health to review the updated guidance,” the district said in a statement. “Effective immediately, the District will not require mask wearing at VHS sporting events but wearing masks will remain an individual choice.

Jim Cunningham, Verona’s director of community services and head of all Recreation Department programs, alerted Rec program participant by email, saying that the change applies to all Township-owned athletic fields, courts, playgrounds and bleachers as well. “Thank you all for the diligent effort made to suppress this virus,” Cunningham wrote. “We remember those who were lost and hope for more normalcy this summer.”
