The Verona Board of Education will have one seat up for a vote on November 3, and if you are interested in running, you can now download a Candidates Kit from the New Jersey School Board Association’s website. One very important change to this year’s kit: The state is now allowing prospective candidates to gather signatures on nominating petitions remotely and submit them in an electronic format.
Gov. Phil Murphy authorized the switch to e-signatures last month as part of his efforts to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The rules for gathering and transmitting them are all spelled out on the website of New Jersey’s secretary of state.
If you are running, you must get all materials to the Essex County Clerk–not the school district office–by 4 p.m. on July 27. The county clerk’s address is Essex County Clerk Election Division, Hall of Records, 465 Martin Luther King Blvd., Room 246, Newark, NJ 07102. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Published by the New Jersey School Board Association, the School Board Candidate Kit includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for candidacy, the role of the school board member, the School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process. You can also get information from the county clerk’s website.
A full term on the school board runs for three years. Lisa Freschi, the current BOE president, will be running for re-election.
