The Poekel properties include both the triangular lot near the corner of Linn Drive and Bloomfield Avenue and the long former railroad right-of-way that stretches to Personette  Avenue.

The Verona Town Council has called a special meeting for Thursday, May 28 at 7 p.m. to vote on acquiring two properties owned by the Poekel family near the Verona Community Center.

The properties are Block 2301, Lots 17 and 18, and they abut the former Cameco property that the town purchased in December 2018. They are all in an area, bordered by green in the image above, as an area in need of redevelopment, and the town has contracted with PIRHL to create a 100% affordable housing development on the Cameco site. “Affordable” housing means a dwelling that could be purchased or rented by someone with a moderate income, roughly $47,000 to $75,000 a year in our area. It is not the same as Section 8 housing, which is government-subsidized housing for very low-income people.

The Poekel properties were to be a separate development that would have included both market rate and affordable housing. The property was part of the real estate holdings assembled by Charles Axel Poekel Sr., a Verona realtor who died in 2012. Poekel was also the inventor of a method for de-icing aircraft propellers.
