Letter: Remember The Asylum Seekers

To The Editor:

In three weeks time, Jewish people all over the state of New Jersey will celebrate the holiday of Passover, when we remember our time in bondage and suffering. Although our seders will no doubt be less crowded and joyful we will still have our families and our freedom. And as we do, so we should remember the 52,000 immigrants being held in detention nationally and the three detention camps in New Jersey which cage thousands of people–someone’s children, parents, siblings, friends–for the “crime” of seeking asylum.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 these detention camps will be turned into death centers, even as they continue to earn millions in contracts with ICE. To honor this holiday we should all call upon Governor Murphy to use his emergency powers to release these innocent, harmless detainees and prevent their needless deaths.

Call the Governor and your local elected official and remind them that no one is free until all are free. Demand that those locked up in immigration detention be set free so that innocent people do not die.
