Town, Schools, First Responders Coordinate On Coronavirus

By on March 8, 2020

There are no known cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Verona as of this morning, and Verona’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has been preparing for a response by all township officials, first responders and the school district if that were to change.

Det. Joel Martin, who heads the OEM, here wants the public to know that:

• The Township of Verona and Verona Public Schools have taken steps to ensure cleanliness of public buildings and schools.
• Verona Police, Fire and EMS have reviewed and updated policy, equipment and training for responding to related incidents.
• Under the direction State and County professionals, we strongly recommend residents follow trusted resources to better understand the virus including NJ Department of Health, NJ Office of Emergency Management and Center for Disease Control.

The Township and Board of Education have instructed employees on best practices regarding their personal workspace. Personnel and maintenance staff have been and will continue to sanitize public buildings repeatedly through out the work day.

First responders have renewed training on personal protective equipment in an effort to mitigate the spread. Employees have been instructed to stay home if they are feeling symptoms, and use pharmaceutical interventions and virtual doctor visits.

There has also been long-term planning, including preparing for continuity of essential government services including virtual school sessions, emergency response and utilities.

“Again, Township of Verona and Verona Board of Education Officials will continue to receive guidance from state officials regarding additional steps and guidelines,” says Martin. “We encourage residents to sign up for alerts from the Center for Disease Control and self-monitor the health of family and friends.”
