Verona High School’s girls basketball scored a bit of an upset in the final preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament on Thursday. The girls are the No. 18 seed in a field of 31 teams in this year’s ECT but they handily beat No. 15 seed Bloomfield 53-32 on the Bengal’s home turf.

The girls move on to Round 1 of the ECT, which will take place East Orange Campus High School on Saturday. East Orange is the No. 2 seed in this year’s ECT and the game has a 1 p.m. start. The Lady Hillbillies are 4-13 on the season and 1-11 in conference.

Verona boys basketball was the No.20 seed in a field of 38 teams in the boys ECT this year, and had a blowout 74-47 preliminary round against No. 29 seed Weequahic this past Saturday. But West Orange, the No. 13 seed, proved a tougher challenge and, despite a season-high 22 points from Andrew Emanuilidis, VHS fell 50-41. Emanuilidis was effective all over the court, leading Verona in field goals, three-pointers and at the free-throw line.
