‘Where In Verona Is It?’ The Reboot, Week 4

Well, last week, we made it all the way to a lightning round on Saturday before Jack McEvoy–yes, the Jack McEvoy who now serves as Verona’s mayor–identified the object of all of Fred Goode’s photos as Lakeside Deli. A business that is one of the oldest still operating in Verona now managed to stump our readers for more than five days.

Fred took a risk picking Lakeside as a location: It has been part of Verona’s food map since 1969 and legions of Verona residents have worked there over the years. McEvoy recognized Saturday’s photo of a gate as being the back outside gate at Lakeside, but he also told us that, had we shown the photo of the metal staircase earlier in the week, he would have known immediately where it was. The metal stairs replaced an earlier wooden staircase and McEvoy, a Verona native who was among those who have worked at Lakeside, once fell down the stairs with four full trays of food in his hands. He says he landed in the potato salad, if you must know.

Not every week of “Where In Verona Is It?” has demanded the expertise of a Verona native to solve. Anthony Francos (week 1) and Olive That And More (week 2) are relative newcomers to Verona. But the readers who made the correct guesses in these contests were able to specifically associate the photos they saw with an aspect of the location because they had interacted with those businesses. That was a hallmark of the contest when it first ran almost 10 years ago, too. And so, as we embark on week 4 of “Where In Verona Is It?”, we have a challenge for you. Don’t just make random guesses about locations. Use your knowledge of Verona–whether you’ve been here for one year, 10 years or 50–to tell your fellow readers what the photo is in relation to the location. Tell us the story behind the photo and your experience with the location.

And now, on to week 4. Remember, all guesses must be made here by submitting a comment to the story, and you’ve got to use your real name and real email address.

UPDATE: Early Friday morning, Jessica Nahigian got the correct guess: AKB. She told us that she recognized the wine stand and the orange wall, and the porthole in the kitchen door. If we had gone to a lightning round on Saturday, these shots might also have given it away:

  2. As we reach the end of week 4, I would like to remind everyone that your guess needs to include what the photo is of, not just a guess at location.
