Verona High School’s wrestling team swept a quad meet on Saturday, defeating Depaul 39-24, Montclair 58-22, and Orange 48-27. Several Verona wrestlers were 3-0 in the meet as well.
Sam Zamloot, a senior who wrestles at 138, was 3-0 with three pins to his credit, as was Jayden Czupak, a sophomore wrestling at 152. Zamloot pinned Nico Scirocco of DePaul in just 43 seconds and Christopher Fabre of Orange in 44. Czupak’s pin of DePaul’s Jacob Gerish came at the end of one of the longest matches of the day, which lasted more than 5 minutes.
Ryan Huze and Cole Hildebrandt, both seniors who wrestle at 160 and 170/182 respectively, were 3-0 with two pins apiece. Sophmore PJ Shaw (126) was 3-0 with one pin, junior Dean Palmer (132) was 3-0, and Jacob Lapid, a sophomore heavyweight (220) was 2-1.
The quad win was a big rebound for the Verona team, which had lost four matches after a strong season opener at the Edison Classic. VHS will host West Essex on Monday evening.
