Patrons were invited to sign a poster to honor the people in their lives who are fighting cancer.

It only ran for a few short hours, but the fundraiser that Lakeside Deli and Eight Hills Caterers held for the V Foundation for Cancer Research on November 9 was a big success.

The event, which started as a way for Brian Hill to honor his uncle, Jimmy Jandoli, and the parents of two key friends who had all passed away from cancer, raised $5,000 for the V Foundation. Hill’s “Subs for Support” push donated 100% of the profits from a special menu of Lakeside’s subs and its signature Sloppy Joe sandwiches, and many former Lakeside and Eight Hills workers came back in to run the slicers and make all the subs.

The V Foundation was founded by Jim Valvano, a former college basketball player and coach, who was also a broadcaster on ESPN and ABC Sports. Before he died on April 28, 1993 from a rare form of cancer, Valvano created the V Foundation to defeat the disease. Since then, it has awarded over $225 million in cancer research grants nationwide and has become one of the leading supporters of cutting-edge cancer research.

The event’s slicers and sandwich makers were treated to dinner afterwards.
