It took them three sets but the Verona High School volleyball team defeated Millburn 2-1 on Senior Night on Monday. This year’s seniors are Kelly Waterman, Sloane Lawless and Sofia Fiorita, as well as team statistician Priya Limbachiya.
Verona took the first set 25-19, but came up short in the second, which was a 25-21 Millburn win. The final set was a nail-biter that Verona finally pulled out for a 25-22 victory.
Waterman led the scoring for Verona with 14 service points and 25 assists. Sinclaire Infusino, a junior, and sophomore Ashley Duhaney had nine service points each. The clearest indication though, of how tough the game was can be found in the stats on digs: Jessie Loudon had 17, Megan Meehan had 12 and Infusino had 11. Digs are a recovery of a hard-driven ball from the opponent, often through a dive to the floor.
The win improves Verona’s record to 14-5 on the season. The Lady Hillbillies will host another of its chief rivals, Bogota, the team that beat Verona in the Group 1 championship last season. That game begins at 6 p.m.
