Two West Orange residents are alive today thanks to quick work by the Verona Fire Department, Verona Rescue Squad and Verona Police Department, and the intervention of a Mount Prospect Avenue resident.

According to VPD Chief Christopher Kiernan, a car was traveling south on Mount Prospect last night around 8:30 p.m. when the driver failed to make the curve near the intersection of Sunset Avenue. The car left the roadway and struck a utility pole on the Montclair Golf Course side of the street. After impact, the driver was able to exit the car, and the passenger was helped out by the Mount Prospect resident. Kiernan said today that the VRS transported both accident victims to Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair with non-life threatening injuries. The VFD extinguished the vehicle fire.

“The accident is still under investigation,” Kiernan said, “but speed appears to be a factor.” He said that “numerous” summonses are being issued. The accident investigation is being conducted by VPD Officer Christopher Scheper, and anyone with information on the accident can reach him through the VPD’s main switchboard at 973-239-5000.
