Mr. Lawrence S. Burdett, 68, died on June 20, 2019 at his home in Verona. A memorial service and Fire Department honors will be held in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 36 Gould Street, Verona on Saturday, June 29 at 2 p.m.

Born in Montclair, Larry was a lifelong resident of Verona. He graduated from Verona High School in 1969, attended the University of Kentucky and Fairleigh Dickinson University, obtaining a degree in finance and spent his career working in the insurance and mortgage fields in Morris and Essex counties.

After retiring in 2013 he started his “second career” as a crossing guard in Verona, working up to this week.

Larry achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while a member of BSA Troop 5, Verona.

He joined the Verona Fire Department Auxiliary in 1968 and became a full volunteer in 1974. Larry served as chief in 1999/2000 and again in 2007/2008. He was the first chief to serve twice and part of the first “father/son chief”: His father Merle was also a chief of the department.

Larry also served on numerous committees and offices within the department, including bylaws, LOSAP, fundraising, new rigs, 100th anniversary, membership, auxiliary advisor, driver training, Exempt Association treasurer; Engine Company 1 secretary, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief. He was a member of the West Essex Fire Officers Association, the Essex County Chiefs Association and on the Verona Fire Department softball team.

Larry became a qualified member of the New Jersey State Fireman’s Association and a member of the New Jersey Exempt Association in December of 1988.

He was predeceased by his parents, Merle and Doris (nee Holly) Burdett, and is survived by cousins.
