Softball’s Cinderella Story Comes To An End

All good stories must eventually come to an end, and so it was yesterday with the Verona High School softball team’s stellar run through the playoffs. The Lady Hillbillies fell to Ramsey High School 4-1 in the Group 2 semifinal.

Verona softball, which had moved through the playoffs by scoring upset over upset, had its moments in Friday’s game. In the fourth inning, Samantha Costigan got the ball moving on Verona’s only run by hitting a double to center. Christina Colon, playing her last game for the maroon-and-white, followed that with a double of her own that sent Costigan home.

There was also some very deft fielding by the Hillbillies, including Jessie Loudon, Sara Bochicchio and Sinclaire Infusino, and a diving catch by senior Kate Ryan that had the crowd cheering when she thrust her mitt in the air with the ball.

But this year’s Verona team is likely to most remember the two-part game against Hanover Park in which Verona unseated the defending champions to capture the North 2, Group 2 sectional championship. That 6-2 win was the first championship for Verona since 2005.
