Girls Lax Advances In ECT As Boys Fall

By on April 29, 2019

Saturday was the opening round of the Essex County Tournament in lacrosse and Verona High School’s girls team will be going on to the next round.

The Lady Hillbillies’ 19-5 win over 10th-seeded Newark Academy was also Senior Day for Verona, so it was perhaps only fitting that the team’s seniors delivered the bulk of the scoring. Julia Mackey led the way with six goals, followed by five from Lara Tole–plus two assists–and three from Ally May Madigan, who also led Verona in ground balls. Fellow seniors Chloe Conway, Erin Kiernan, and Brooke Wagner had one goal apiece. Maeve McGinley rounds out the senior roster for Verona this year.

Verona’s record now stands at 6-6 overall and 4-1 in league. The Lady Hillbillies, who are the seventh seed in the ECT, will travel to Montclair on Monday afternoon to face second-seeded Montclair Kimberley Academy in the quarterfinals.

While the boys lacrosse team has a strong 9-5 record this season, that was not enough for them to overcome Livingston in their opening ECT game. Jack Lonsinger had two goals and Matt Aldiero, Jarrod Keating, Steven Luehs and Patrick Yeates had one apiece, but the Verona boys fell to the Lancers 14-6.
