Track Has Strong Showing At Relays

Lily Benanchietti cleared 9′, a personal best and the pole vault team of Benanchietti, Erin Petrino and Rebecca Katsios took second place.
The Verona High School girls track & field team had a very strong showing in a very competitive field of 30 teams at the Season Opener Invitational Relays at River Dell High School on Saturday, finishing second in the division of Group 1 and 2 schools.

Verona’s 400m hurdle team of Alex DeVivo, Chelsea Gruskin and Lauren Kobernick kicked off the meet with a second place finish in 3:39.9. The 4 x 800m team of Brianna Rigney, Julia DiGeronimo, Olivia Vogel and Bridget O’Donnell took fourth place in 10:36.7. The sprint medley team of Alex DeVivo, Faith Fauerbach, Lauren Kobernick and Kate Ashley took third place with a 4:28.8 finish. The pole vault team of Lily Benanchietti, Erin Petrino and Rebecca Katsios took second place, with both Benanchietti and Petrino clearing 9’. The distance team of Julia DiGeronimo, Brianna Rigney, Kate Ashley and Bridget O’Donnell took third place in 13:59.

The novice 4 x 800m team of Lucy Hogan, Lindsey Rawding, Emma Hogan and Karina Squilanti took sixth with 11:42, while both the 4 x 200m and sprint medley novice teams finished seventh. The 4 x 200m team is Francesca Valle, Faith Fauerbach, Sofia Saj and Abby Castillo, and the sprint medley team is Jordan Ferry, Jackie DeVivo, Emma Zalewski and Jessica Day.

The following girls also competed in field events throughout the meet: Long jump–Francesca Valle, Faith Fauerbach and Chelsea Gruskin; discus–Gabriella Petti, Gillian O’Donnell, Aimee Griffin, Kiera Egan and Abby Cleary; javelin–Brianna Rigney, Gillian O’Donnell, Natalie Romanyshyn, Emily Wynne and Lindsey Rawding; shot put–Jenna DaRin and Abby Cleary

Several VHS girls had personal bests in their events: Lily Benanchietti (9′ pole vault), Gillian O’Donnell (92’) and Natalie Romanyshyn (72’), both in javelin.


The VHS boys track & field also had several strong finishes. PJ Jordan, Griffin Jordan and Isaac Skrivanic combined for second place in javelin. The 4 x 1600 relay team of Sean Carney, Chris Robinson, Mike Maglione and David Navarro took fourth place with a time of 19:39.4. The 4×800 team of Mike Maglione, Amon Rosenweig, Vincent Hogan and David Navarro also had a fourth-place finish, with a time of 8:49.1. The high jump relay team of Nick Giuliano, Joey Visone and Ian Kirby medaled with a sixth-place finish.
