Track Teams Get Medals, New Record At Essex Championships

There was a first place finish in the 800m and a new school record in the 200m as the Verona High School girls and boys winter track teams competed at the Essex County Track & Field Championships on Monday. The Verona girls took fifth place in a field of 28 teams, while the boys finished in seventh place.

In the highlights on the girls side, Kate Ashley won the 800m run in a time of 2:20.8 and returned an hour later to get third in the 400m at 61.67. The championships took place in the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.

Lily Benanchietti got fourth in pole vault with a vault of 8’6”. The team of Alex DeVivo, Chelsea Ruskin, Brianna Rigney and Kate Ashley got fifth in the 4 x 400m relay with a time of 4:20.5. Sophomore Bridget O’Donnell got sixth place in both the 1600m (5:47.69) and 3200m (12:40.58), while Alex DeVivo got sixth in high jump with a jump of 4’6” .

On the boys side, junior Aiden Murphy broke his own 200 meter indoor school record, running 23.86. The time put him in 15th place for that event. Owen Fogarty finished in second place in pole vault, clearing 13’6″, while Isaac Skrivanic took second in shot put, throwing 46’10″. Michael Maglione was ninth in the 1600m with a time of 4:45.48 and eighth in the 3200 at 10:46.13.
