The Verona High School girls basketball team bounced back from a close loss to Glen Ridge and improved its season record to 10-2 on Thursday by defeating a strong West Essex team.
It was Verona’s game from the get-go in the fast-paced contest, though the scoring gap was sometimes tight in the first half. By the end of the third period, however, the Hillbillies had widened their lead over the Knights to 43-28 and didn’t look back.
Brianna Horton led the scoring for Verona, with 19 points in the 59-52 win. Kylee Gallagher put up 14 points, while Melanie Naeris and Desiree Meyer had 11 points apiece. Cayla Okafor led all players in rebounds with 10. Jessica Coia and Olivia Hansson were the top scorers for the West Essex, with 15 points apiece.
The Lady Hillbillies have been on a tear since the start of the year, winning five of their six games, including blowouts against Columbia and Orange high schools. The girls won’t be back in action again until next Thursday, January 24, when they host Mount Saint Dominic in a game with a 6 p.m. start.
