As storybook endings go, it doesn’t go much better than the ending of the University of North Carolina women’s soccer game on Friday night if you’re from Verona, N.J.

In the second overtime of the game against second-ranked Georgetown, nearly 108 minutes into play, senior defender Julia Ashley (VHS ’15) scored the goal that will send third-ranked UNC to the NCAA College Cup final on Sunday. The Tar Heels will play fifth-ranked Florida State at 1 p.m. tomorrow after the Seminoles defeated top-ranked Stanford on Friday.

The winning shot, one Verona game watcher observed, was like a parting of the waters. There was a pass to Ashley, who sent it off to a teammate, who sent it back to Ashley. And she sent it into the net without a Hoya defender anywhere in sight. You can watch it all on UNC’s website

The goal was Ashley’s sixth of the season, and tied her for the team lead. It was her goal in the opening minutes of the UNC-UCLA College Cup quarterfinals that helped to send UNC to the semifinals. Sunday’s game will be the third between UNC and Florida State this season, and each team has won one so far. The final will be broadcast on ESPN U, which is Fios channel 573 in Verona.
