This game was certainly worth the wait.

The Verona High School girls tennis team was supposed to have played Mount Saint Dominic Academy way back on September 25, but this fall’s endless rain forced a postponement. The teams finally met on Tuesday afternoon, and the Lady Hillbillies pulled off a stunning upset.

Megan Forest, at first singles, delivered Verona’s first win of the afternoon by defeating Michaela Smith 6-2, 6-1. Ashley Baumgard, who often plays doubles, had a win at second singles over Julie Schramm. But there was a loss for Gillian O’Donnell at third singles, as well as for Kylee Gallagher and Sara Sexton at first doubles.

And then all eyes turned to Elyssia Yung and Brooke Anquillare, Verona’s second doubles squad for the day. Yung and Anquillare dropped the first set 5-7, but rallied to take the next two 6-3, 6-4.

The win was a plum for the Verona team, which is now 7-14 on the season. VHS tennis is off until Friday, when it travels to Montclair High School for a 4 p.m. start
