The Verona High School volleyball team took on Cedar Grove last night in their annual “Dig Pink” fundraiser to benefit the Minette’s Angels Foundation.

The Lady Hillbillies’ varsity and JV teams, and Verona PBA Local 72 presented a check for $250 to the board of the Verona breast cancer charity, which helps breast cancer patients during and after treatment, at their homes and at Saint Barnabas Hospital. The Verona Police Department, like all VHS sports teams, is wearing pink this month for breast cancer awareness.

Then it was on to the game. VHS volleyball roared back after its loss to Hudson Catholic last Friday and dispatched Cedar Grove in two straight sets, 25-12 and 25-11. Seniors Brooke Cooney and Hunter Coppola led Verona in kills with six apiece and Coppola had two rather spectacular blocks to her credit as well. Cooney also led the team in digs, with six.

Verona travels to Bloomfield tomorrow for a 4 p.m. game. Their record now stands at 14-3.
