The Verona High School baseball team seemed to be falling against Henry P. Becton Regional High School in the early innings on Friday afternoon, but three Hillbilly runs in the sixth turned the game into a 4-3 Verona win.

Freshman Pierce Coppola was on the mound for VHS for the first five innings and allowed just three hits and two runs. Coppola, a lefty, was also effective at keeping the Becton runners on in check, both on first base and in a deft squeeze play in the second inning.

Anthony Zamloot had the hot bat for Verona, with two hits, a run and an RBI. Ian Metzger and David Motley both had doubles, while Dean Ramsthaler got a deep single and an RBI. Among the fielding of note: Tino Quagliata’s sliding catch deep in right field in the bottom of the fourth.

The Hillbillies, who are 9-8 overall, have a 2 p.m. game in Millburn today.
