Ian MetzgerYou would have had to have been a fast-flying raptor to capture all the Verona High School sports teams in action on Monday. Baseball, softball and boys lacrosse were spread across the high school fields, while the golf team was over at the Montclair Golf Club and boys tennis was to the west at West Essex. When it was all over, VHS had three more wins in the record books and two losses.

Baseball was locked in a close game with Montclair Kimberley Academy for much of the afternoon, with the teams tied at 3 in the bottom of the seventh. In the eighth, MKA intentionally walked Mike Daggett, but was clearly not expecting what lay in store next from Anthony Zamloot. His hit, which you can see in the video clip below, secured the 4-3 win for the Hillbillies. Verona’s record now stands at 2-2 and the team travels to West Orange on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.

Boys tennis defeated West Essex on the strength of its doubles play. The first doubles team of Max Batson and Henry Wertz defeated Ross Fundler and Ethan Goldberg 7-6, 7-3, while Evan Silvia and Justin Munjack at second doubles bested Aiden Hobson and Jason Sisco 7-6, 6-1. Both Verona’s first and second singles players came up short, but Brian Feury was victorious after 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 against Stephen Tilton. Verona is now 1-1 on the season. The team hosts Columbia High School on Wednesday.

The golf team, meanwhile got its first win of the season with a 160-218 final over Belleville. It will play Nutley High School at the Hendricks Field Golf Course on Thursday.

You know it’s going to be a great softball game when VHS squares off against Cedar Grove, and Monday was no exception. The Panthers, who ended last season with an upset win over Verona in the North I Group I tournament finals, got on the scoreboard first in the opening minutes yesterday. But the Lady Hillbillies clawed back with with an RBI groundout by Cadden Pelfree. The teams stayed tied at 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning, when Cedar Grove’s Ava Mandala got a ground rule double. The loss moves Verona’s record to 1-3 this season. The team will be in Caldwell later today for 7 p.m. start.

Boys lacrosse, playing up on Sellitto Field, was simply overpowered by Pascack Valley. The 16-4 loss drops the Hillbillies to 1-4. The team hosts Columbia tomorrow.
