Christina ColonThe Verona High School softball team plays on what always seems to be the windier side of Doc Goeltz Field. But Christina Colon didn’t let yesterday’s weather blow her pitching off course: She delivered a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and four walks as Verona defeated Bloomfield 1-0.

Verona scored its lone run early in the game. Melanie Naeris, a freshman making her varsity softball debut, got a walk. Cadden Pelfree, a junior returning from last year’s strong squad, followed with a bunt and sent Naeris to second, but she spotted an opportunity and continued to third. Bloomfield’s throw to third mis-fired and Naeris bolted for home. Pelfree later had a single, as did Kate Stanisci and Jessie Loudon.

The Lady Hillbillies travel to Chatham on Saturday for a 10 a.m. start.

The boys team also faced a Bloomfield opponent, but didn’t fare as well. VHS baseball fell to the Bengals 4-0, despite strong hitting by Ian Metzer, Nick Coppola and Jake Milmoe. Metzger handled the pitching duties for six innings and struck out five Bloomfield players. Verona hosts West Essex today at 4 p.m.
