Fish-ChipsThe Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit will be holding what it calls a “Fabulous Fish Fry” on Friday, March 23 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The proceeds will help put more food on the shelves of its Food Pantry, which is celebrating its two-year anniversary.

The cost for dinner is $18 for adults and $9 for children under age 12 in advance, and $22 and $11 at the door; desserts and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Take-out will also be available. For reservations, email [email protected] or call 973-239-2850. Holy Spirit is located at 36 Gould Street, opposite the field at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School. The food is being prepared by Argyle Restaurant of Kearny.

Holy Spirit’s Food Pantry is open from 9 to 11 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of every month. In explaining why the congregation started the program, parishioner Mary Garland shared her family’s struggling with securing enough food when she was growing up in Verona. “The reason for telling this secret now is that it is not uncommon for families in a town like Verona to be struggling today,” she wrote. “Uncertain economic times, divorce, illness or the inability to find income that provides enough for a family can all contribute to this ‘hidden poverty’.”

Holy Spirit maintains a bin by its side door where donations for the Food Pantry can be left. It maintains a list of urgently needed items on its website.
