The Verona High School girls team breezed through their opening round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2 Group 2 basketball playoffs, while the boys team put up a stiff fight before falling to Bernards High School 37-32.

Desiree Meyer, who was sidelined for the Essex County Tournament game against University, was back in action for the girls–in a big way. Meyer floated in four beautiful three-pointers but she wasn’t the only Verona player playing with a flourish. Cecilia “CC” Courter, the game’s high scorer with 13 points, delivered a circus shot in the first quarter that brought the crowd to its feet. Cayla Okafor and Kylee Gallagher were fierce in the paint, grabbing eight and seven rebounds respectively.

The girls, who are the No. 2 seed in the bracket, hosted No. 15 Parsippany and the game was as lopsided as those kind of match-ups tend to get, ending at 43-19. Parsippany didn’t get out of the single digits in scoring until the fourth period, when Verona’s starters had mostly ceded their spots to the team’s upcoming players. Jenna Devens was the high scorer for Parsippany, with six.

The Verona girls’ next opponent will be No. 7 seed Hanover Park, which defeated Science Park yesterday 58-14. That game will be at VHS at 4 p.m.
