Bill Fauerbach pinned Belvidere’s Zachary Vought in his opening match.
The Region 3 wrestling championship kicked off last night in West Orange and almost all of Verona High School’s wrestlers will be advancing to the Friday round.

John Gabriele, wrestling at 152, scored a technical fail over Bradley Mika of Wood-Ridge. He will take on Justin LeMay of West Morris in the quarterfinals. At 170 pounds, Nick Riggio got an 11-3 major decision on Nick Wolmart of Randolph. Riggio faces the bracket’s No. 2 seed, AJ Lonski of Delbarton, next. At 182 pounds, Bill Fauerbach got a big pin on Belvidere’s Zachary Vought in 3:19. Fauerbach goes up against the No. 4 seed, Kenneth Newman of Livingston. The lone loss for Verona was Dean Palmer (120), against Charlie Treston of Randolph. But Palmer is only a freshman, and he ran up a record of 20 wins–eight of which were by pin–and just eight losses in his opening varsity season.

Frank Gabriele, who won the District 10 wrestling championship at 138 pounds this past Saturday, had a bye in first round. He will face Scott Finnis of Randolph on Friday night. The quarterfinals begin at 6 p.m. in West Orange, with semifinals starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Consolation finals for third place will be at 1:30 p.m. and the finals at 3:30 p.m.
