No Verona player made it out of the single digits as the Verona High School girls basketball fell, 73-21, to Essex County powerhouse University High School in Newark.
The game was all University from the opening tip. The Phoenix’ Teresa Ortiz made 3-pointers look easy as she floated six into the hoop on her way to 24 points for her team. While Brianna Horton and CC Courter did their best to rally Verona, the Lady Hillbillies were playing without this season’s high-scorer, Desiree Meyer, who had taken a elbow to the jaw in the Cedar Grove game on Friday night.
University, the ECT’s No. 1 seed, which take on fifth-seeded Montclair Immaculate in the semifinals on Wednesday. Verona is off until Thursday afternoon, when they face Central High School at home.
