Frank Gabriele won the District 10 wrestling championship at 138 pounds on Saturday and will be one of five Verona High School wrestlers advancing to Regions later this coming week.

Gabriele kicked off his Districts appearance with a swift pin of Nutley’s Sal Maniero, while his brother John also pinned his first semifinals opponent, Bradley Mika of Wood-Ridge. In the finals, Frank Gabriele captured first place with a 10-6 decision over Delbarton’s Dante Stefanelli, while John Gabriele came up short against another Delbarton wrestler, Vincent Andreano, and finished in second place in his weight class.

VHS had sent a total of 12 wrestlers to Districts and three of them claimed three third place finishes. Dean Palmer, a freshman wrestling at 120, shook off his opening loss and came back to win a 2-1 decision over Hamza Chah of Becton for third place at that weight class. Nick Riggio, wrestling at 170, earned his third place finish when he pinned Stephen Rykola of Wood-Ridge in 2:25. Bill Fauerbach, who like the Gabrieles is in his senior year on the Verona wrestling squad, pinned Daniel Jennings of Nutley in 4:37. Verona finished in fourth place overall in District 10, with 120 points.

Frank Gabriele was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the District 10 Tournament by the coaches in the district.
