Kate Ashley (far right) took second in the 800m and is headed to the Meet of Champions. She and the rest of the 4×400 relay team (l-r Olivia Fiore, Brianna Rigney and Alex DeVivo) qualified for the Penn Relays in April.

Winter track’s Group championships were held yesterday in Toms River and two Verona High School athletes finished high enough that they will be competing in the Meet of Champions next Saturday.

Kate Ashley moves on after her second place finish in the 800m race, which featured the best 24 Group 1 girls in the state. Owen Fogarty finished fourth in pole vault with a new school record of 12’6 and also qualifyied for the Meet of Champions.

Verona’s 4x400m team of Olivia Fiore, Brianna Rigney, Alex DeVivo and Kate Ashley finished eighth out of 24 teams with a time of 4:18.5. While that was not good enough to send them on to the Meet of Champions, it does qualify then to compete in the prestigious Penn Relays in April.

The boys 4×400 team of sophomores Vincent Hogan, David Navarro and Bryan McKeen and senior Evan Huaman also competed in Groups after finishing sixth at Sectionals with a time of 3:50.68. They were faster at Groups, turning in a time of 3:50.36, but that was not fast enough to qualify them for the Meet of Champions.
