The Verona High School wrestling team traveled to Hackettstown High School for a quad yesterday, but the biggest victory went well beyond the team: John Gabriele, who wrestles at 152, achieved his 99th, 100th and 101st career wins at the event.
Gabriele scored win 100 over Hackettstown’s Garrett Meyer with a pin in just 51 seconds. He also bested his opponents from Ramsey and Secaucus high schools.
With his 100th win, Gabriele joins an exclusive club of Verona wrestlers that includes Dillon Lawler and Chris Hardenberg in 2008, Colin Farawell in 2011, Frank Greco in 2013, Paul Scully in 2014, Mark Riggio in 2016 and John’s twin brother, Frank Gabriele, in 2017. John Gabriele recently took second in his weight class at the Essex County Wrestling Tournament.
