Verona’s public schools called it a snow day early this morning, thanks to the winter storm that is expected to bring heavy and blowing snow to our area today. The closing also cancels all sports, afterschool activities, township recreation programs, and non-district events held in Verona school buildings.

“Our township and district staff will be working to maintain safe roadways, pedestrian routes, and school facilities,” said Superintendent Dr. Rui Dionisio in a note posted to the schools’ website. “Due to the nature of the storm, additional time and efforts are necessary to ensure the safety of students and staff. School and township personnel will take necessary measures over the next 24 hours with snow removal from street corners, crosswalks, sidewalks, school drop off areas, parking lots, and roads to prepare our schools and community for regular operation.”

The National Weather Service has a winter storm warning in effect until 1 a.m. on Friday. It says snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour are possible this morning and into early afternoon, with the total snow accumulations expected to be four to eight inches. It also says wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour are possible, which could bring down tree limbs and cause power outages.

DeCamp Bus Lines is cross-honoring New Jersey Transit tickets, but that may not help your commute all that much because the exclusive bus lane through the tunnels is closed today due to the weather.
