Advent, Christmas At First Presbyterian

The First Presbyterian Church of Verona, located at 10 Fairview Avenue, has a number of holiday events planned this season.

  • Sunday, December 3 at 3 p.m.:  The church hosts the second of its Community Concert Series and presents the All Seasons Chambers players. The program, entitled French Carnival, will offer contrasting works by four French composers. It will feature All Seasons’ own version of Saint-Saen’s popular “Carnival of the Animals.” Performers include flutists Lisa Hansen, vioinist Bob Lawrence, cellist E. Zoe Hassman and pianists Jean Strickholm and Jacqueline Schiller-Audi. A donation of $10 per person is recommended and after the concert, light refreshments will be served as well as an opportunity to meet the performers.
  • Saturday, December 9: Children’s Christmas Workshop. All children are invited to join us for a fun time of crafts, music, lunch, God Time, baking and the Decorating Extravaganza. The cost to participate is $10 per child ($25 family max) and registration is required. Registration forms are available at the church, Thrift Shop or by calling the church (973-239-3561).   • Sunday, December 10 at 10:15 a.m.: The Cancel Choir, under the direction of Diane Battersby will present the cantata “The Song Heard ‘Round the World” composed by Joseph Martin. The choir will be joined by guest musicians Max Morden (trumpet) and Amanda Morden (flute). Alex Karpinski will be narrating.
  • Thursday, December 14: Blue Christmas Service hosted in conjunction with the Church of the Holy Spirit. This year the service will be held in the Episcopalian church, located at 36 Gould Street. Starting at 7:30 p.m. there will be music, prayers and the lighting of candles to help those who are having a difficult time during the holiday season. This service will emphasize the peace and healing that comes from experience “God with us.”
  • Friday, December 15 at 6 p.m.: Hanging of the Greens. A light supper followed by decorating the church for Christmas and carol singing. Reservations are requested. Please call the church office at 973-239-3561.
  • Sunday, December 17 at 10:15 a.m.: The Intergeneration and Chancel Choirs will be singing “Peace, Peace” accompanied by guest harpist, Robbin Gordon-Cartier. Robbin will also be performing harp solos prior to the service as well as giving the postlude.
  • Sunday, December 24 at 10:15 a.m.: A service of carol singing.
  • Sunday, December 24 at 4 p.m.: The youth choirs (Joyful Noise and Sacred Singers) will be performing This early evening service is one of fun for the whole family, where ALL children are invited to participate in the reenactment of the Christmas story.
  • Sunday, December 24 at 9 p.m.: This quiet service of lessons and carols will feature the Chancel choir accompanied by flutist Liz Hathaway. Music includes: “Love Came Down At Christmas,” “Mary’s Little Boy Child,” and “One Small Child.”
