VHS girls soccerOops, they did it again. The Verona High School girls soccer team, pegged early on to not advance much beyond their 11-place seeding in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 tournament, knocked off another top-seeded opponent.

Just three days after Verona defeated number 6 seed Roselle Park in the opening round of sectionals, the girls travelled to Jersey City and picked off number 3 seed Dr. Ronald E. McNair Academic High School. Picked McNair almost clean, as a matter of fact, running up five goals in the first period on Verona’s way to a 5-1 victory.

Lara Tole led the scoring for Verona with two, bolstering what has already been a strong scoring season for the VHS junior. Sarah Carlucci, Verona’s second highest scorer, found the goal again on Thursday, as did Gabi Montagna and Ally Madigan. Madison Gallagher and Maria Gabriele were each credited with an assist. Kathy Guttierez scored the lone point for McNair.

Verona’s game wasn’t the only upset yesterday in the N2G1 bracket. Number 10 seed Dayton High School defeated number 2 seed North Arlington, setting up a semifinals match in Springfield on Monday afternoon. That game has a 4 p.m. start.
