The Verona Historical Society invites you to join them on Tuesday, June 6, for a tour of Verona’s historic White Rock. The landmark boulder sits high atop Second Mountain and is the centerpiece of a stunning environment. There are local stories and history concerning its use as an important meeting site and it has been associated with Verona’s history for 200 years. There may well be archaeological evidence in the area not only of gatherings since 1805 but of Indian presence at the rock.
The Society will meet in the parking lot in front of the Verona Community Center located at 880 Bloomfield Ave at 7 p.m. For more information you can email the society at [email protected].
I have recently visited the White Rock site and found that there seems to be a Summer Solstice Sunrise and Sunset alignments over the Rock. There also looks like there are alignments concerning other boulders on the trails. I am an amateur Native American Rock Structure finder and examiner. I grew up in West Orange and went to Our Lady of The School in Verona for 8 years. I graduated there in 1969. I never heard of this Rock before and had a great time searching out the parks trails etc. I also believe there are Native artifacts at the site along the trails. I have pictures I took of the sites alignments and I also took pictures of a pre Summer Solstice Sunrise this week. It is scheduled for this Saturday (June 20th)but it looks like rain. Further exploration there may find some very interesting things. Thank you for this post! I enjoyed the article and
wish I was able to take the tour.(FYI There is beautiful large Quartz boulder on the trail and a Black colored boulder with an Indian effigy face on it. It may have been blackened by fires.)
