The Verona Police Department logged a total of 309 assignments during the week of April 1 to April 8, 2017. Responses included the following:
- 12 burglar alarms (7 residential, 5 commercial)
- 37 Rescue Squad dispatches
- 12 Fire Department dispatches
- 10 motor vehicle crash scenes
- 4 arrests
- 74 motor vehicle stops that resulted in 72 traffic summonses and 33 warning notices being issued.
April 2, 1017
1:59 AM: Officer Heriberto Carattini responded along with the Verona Rescue Squad to a report of a possible overdose on Claridge Drive. The victim was found unresponsive but breathing. Paramedics arrived and administered Narcan and the patient was transported to Mountainside Hospital for further treatment.
4:25 AM: Officer Robert Maguire responded to a report of a dispute at a Bloomfield Avenue residence. The resident reported that two males rang her doorbell and attempted to gain entry into the building, but fled the area when she stated she was calling the police. The subjects were located and the one male stated he was attempting to get his property from his ex-girlfriend. The resident stated that she would his property to him. The caller also stated she did not want the male at her home, and she does not want him to contact her. The male was advised of this and also advised that this was a civil matter.
April 3, 1017
12:19 AM: Officer Robert Maguire conducted a motor vehicle stop on Pompton Avenue after a random check of the vehicle license plate showed that the registered owners driver’s license was suspended. The officer obtained the operators credentials and confirmed the license suspension. While speaking with the operator, Officer Maguire observed drug paraphernalia on the center console. The driver was asked to exit the vehicle, and upon opening the door, Officer Maguire observed additional paraphernalia in the compartment on the door. The vehicle was searched and additional paraphernalia was discovered. The operator, Lauren Traettino of Wildwood Crest, was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. After processing, Traettino was released with a pending court date.
3:28 PM: Officer Alyssa Kirby was dispatched to Linn Drive on a report of an unwanted person in the laundry area. The building superintendent reported that a female had been sleeping in the laundry area and he wanted her removed from the property. The superintendent did not wish to sign a complaint. The complainant was advised to call the police if the subject returns.
4:46 PM: While on patrol, Officer Chris Scheper observed a female walking on Fairview Avenue who matched the description of an earlier trespassing call. The female was stopped and asked to identify herself. She identified herself and stated she was at the Linn Drive complex to visit a family member. The female, Jamie Oram of Verona, had outstanding warrants from the Hudson County Sherriffs office and was placed under arrest. Oram was transported to police headquarters, processed and turned over to the Hudson County Sheriffs department.
6:49 PM: Officer Chris Scheper responded along with the Verona Fire Department on a report of a dryer fire on Park Avenue. The resident reported that there was a large amount of smoke coming from the clothes dryer. The fire department removed a towel that was on fire inside the dryer and the smoke was ventilated from inside the home. The value of the damage is unknown at this time.
April 5, 1017
6:31 AM: Officer Robert Juliano responded to a report of a burglary at a Bloomfield Avenue office building. The building superintendent reported that upon arriving at the building, he observed the main entrance door off the track with a garbage can holding the door open. He also observed a supply closet door open. Reported missing at this time is a backpack blower and a rigid pipe snake. The Detective Bureau is investigating.
9:00 AM: Detective Joel Martin arrested Teck Gim and Wendy Gim of Bloomfield and charged them with criminal attempt to traffic personal identifying information pertaining to another person and possession of forgery devices. The arrests occurred after an investigation into a skimming device was located at the Chase Bank on Pompton Avenue. Wendy Gim was
transported to the Essex County Jail. Teck Gim was already lodged in the Bergen County Jail.
9:04 AM: Officer Ed Ruff took a report of a burglary at a Bloomfield Avenue business. An employee reported that her desk drawer was entered and cash was removed from the drawer. Several other offices in the business were also entered. The value of the missing items was approximately $250. The Detective Bureau is investigating.
11:08 AM: Officer Brian McMahon took a report of a fraud from a Pompton Avenue business owner. The business owner reported that money was withdrawn from his business account without his permission. He has contacted his bank and closed the account.
1:25 PM: Officer Michael Barone took a report of a fraud from a Claridge Drive resident. The resident reported that she ordered checks and that they were never delivered. She also reported that she received a call from her bank regarding fraudulent activity on her account, discovering that approximately 50 checks were written against the account. The bank closed her account and she was provided with identity theft information.
April 6, 1017
12:55 AM: Officer Robert Juliano conducted a motor vehicle stop on Mt. Prospect Avenue after an observed violation. While speaking with the operator, he detected an odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. The operator was asked to step from the vehicle at which time the officer continued to detect the odor. The operator was advised that the vehicle was going to be searched due to the odor of marijuana. Nothing was found during the search, and the operator was issued two traffic summonses and sent on his way.
12:36 PM: Officer Ed Ruff responded to a Pompton Avenue business on a report of a shoplifter that had left the store and was walking South on Pompton Avenue. Upon being located near Linden Avenue, the officer observed a large bulge in the subjects coat pocket. When he was asked what was in his pocket, he removed numerous boxes of Advil and energy drinks. The subject, Alfred Lovett of Irvington, was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. After processing, Lovett was released with a pending court date.
