The Verona Police Department logged a total of 360 assignments during the week of March 26–April 1, 2017. Responses included the following:
17 burglar alarms (8 residential, 9 commercial)
29 rescue squad dispatches
11 fire department dispatches
15 motor vehicle crash scenes
1 arrest
90 motor vehicle stops that resulted in 70 traffic summonses and 47 warning notices being
issued.
March 27, 2017
4:10 AM: Officer Robert Maguire responded to a report of a neighbor dispute at a Claremont Avenue residence. All parties were advised of complaint procedures.
11:40 AM: Officer Brian McMahon conducted a motor vehicle stop on Mt. Prospect Avenue after a random check of the vehicle license plate showed the registration was suspended. After confirming the suspended registration, the vehicle was impounded and towed from the scene. The operator, Kabizma Lockhart of East Orange, was issued a summons for driving while
registration suspended.
6:12 PM: Officer Stephanie Colon took a report of a suspicious person from a Derwent Avenue resident. The resident reported that a male followed his daughter and her friend as they were walking home from school earlier in the day. The juveniles then entered a local business in an attempt to lose the male. When they lost sight of the male, they left the store and continued home. The friend also reported a similar incident with the same male in the past. All parties were advised to contact police headquarters if a similar incident occurs. The juvenile detective will follow up on this incident.
9:33 PM: Officer Stephanie Colon responded to a report of a dispute at a Grove Avenue residence. Upon speaking to the resident, she reported that she felt threatened by a text message that she had received from her boyfriend. The boyfriend arrived on the scene and stated that his message was not meant to be threatening. The boyfriend wanted to have a conversation with her about a personal issue that she has been avoiding. Both parties were satisfied and were advised to contact police headquarters if any further assistance was needed.
March 28, 2017
12:04 AM: Officer Robert Maguire conducted a motor vehicle stop on Nassau Road for an observed violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Maguire detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The operator of the vehicle, a male juvenile from Bloomfield, was asked to step from the vehicle and was searched with negative results. The front passenger, a female juvenile from Bloomfield, was also asked to step from the vehicle. At that time, the officer observed a hand rolled marijuana blunt in a sweatshirt pocket. The entire vehicle was then searched with negative results. The juveniles were transported to police headquarters, processed and released to an adult. The juvenile Detective will follow up this
incident.
10:12 AM: Officer Brendan Huber took a report of a fraud from a Bahr Circle resident. The resident reported that he received a text message from a male who identified himself as Mr. McDermott in response to a post the resident had made on Craigslist. The male stated he was going to send a check for more than the purchase price and that the resident should keep $25 for any inconvenience and then send the rest of the money to his movers via a Walmart MoneyGram. The resident did not deposit the check and has ceased all contact with the male.
11:07 AM: Officer Brendan Huber responded to a Pompton Avenue business on a report of a larceny involving a current employee. The store manager reported that an employee has been placing food items in a bag, and walking out the back door of the business without paying for the items. The incident was observed on security camera footage. The store manager did not wish to sign complaints; however wanted the employee escorted from the business. The employee gathered his belongings and left without incident. The value of the missing items is unknown at this time.
4:05 PM: Officer Alyssa Kirby took a report of threatening phone calls and emails from a Bloomfield Avenue resident. The resident stated the messages are from his former business partner. He also stated that his new business partner has been receiving harassing messages and believes that his old partner is attempting to contact former employees and intimidate them. He was advised of complaint procedures and to contact the police if he receives any more threats.
March 29, 2017
10:43 AM: Officer Brian McMahon took a report of ongoing harassment from a Martin Road resident. The resident reported that the neighbor drove by and displayed her middle finger. She also stated that the neighbor speeds past her house. The resident believes this a racial issue, however was unable to provide any examples of racism being exhibited by the neighbor.
1:27 PM: Officer Brian McMahon conducted a motor vehicle stop on Pompton Avenue after a random check of the vehicle registration showed a suspended license and active warrant for the registered owner of the vehicle. After checking the operator’s credentials, an active warrant from the Rahway Municipal Court was confirmed. The operator, Martin Redmon of Roselle, was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. After processing, Redmon posted bail and was released.
3:31 PM: Officer Justin Nielsen took a report of a fraud from a Cliff Street resident. The resident reported that last week she was contacted by Visa regarding a purchase that was made on her credit card. The resident advised Visa that she did not make the purchase. On date reported, she arrived home and found a package that she did not order. The resident will contact Visa and the shipper to determine what to do with the package. The resident closed her Visa account. She
was provided with identity theft information.
3:53 PM: Officer Justin Nielsen responded to the area of Bloomfield Avenue and White Rock Road on a report of a female yelling at passing vehicles. The officer located the female and observed that she was intoxicated and having difficulty walking. The Verona Rescue Squad responded and transported her to Mountainside Hospital. A relative of the female was notified of her condition and transportation to the hospital.
6 PM: Officer Justin Nielsen took a report of an assault from a Linn Drive resident. The resident reported that he had a friend staying with him for several days. While the friend was there, he was drinking heavily and made threats towards the resident. The resident reported that the friend twisted his arm and punched him in the ribs and head. The resident is concerned the friend may return to the apartment. The resident was advised of complaint procedures and to contact the
police if the friend returns.
March 30, 2017
12:55 PM: Officer Brian McMahon took a report of a fraud from a Claridge Drive resident. The resident reported that she received a call from the Union Township Police Department who advised that they had a subject in custody that was in possession of two of her checks. The resident advised them that no one should be in possession of her checks, and that she did not write them. Upon checking her account, she found approximately 20 checks had been written totaling $8000. She closed her bank account and was advised to contact police headquarters if she finds any additional suspicious activity on her account.
1 PM: Officer Michael Barone took a report of a larceny from an East Lincoln Street resident. The resident reported her iPhone was stolen while she was shopping in Totowa. After arriving home, the resident received an email from Apple reporting her phone was located in Clifton. Clifton Police were contacted and provided with the location of the phone. The value of the phone is approximately $600.

9:42 PM: Officer Chris Scheper took a report of a fraud from a Sunnyside Place resident. The resident reported receiving several messages during the day requesting confirmation of eBay purchases. The resident did not make the purchases and denied the transactions. Upon checking his eBay account, he discovered another unauthorized purchase that had been processed with the item being shipped to an East Orange address. The resident contacted eBay and advised them of the fraudulent purchase. The resident also closed his eBay account. He was advised to contact the police if he discovers any other fraudulent purchases.
April 1, 2017
3:33 PM Officer Alyssa Kirby took a report of a dispute from a Pompton Plains resident. The resident reported that he had contracted a company to move a vehicle from Texas to Verona. The person delivering the vehicle requested more money than was originally agreed upon. The delivery person then tried to get the keys to put the vehicle back onto the tow truck. All parties were advised that the issue was a civil matter. The vehicle was turned over to the owner without
further incident.
8:33 PM: Officer Alyssa Kirby took a report of harassment from a Durrell Street resident. The resident reported harassing messages sent on his son’s Instagram account. It appears that someone logged onto the account and sent inappropriate messages. The account was deleted.
