Question 3:  What has been your most rewarding volunteer service experience, in or out of Verona, and why?

Kevin J. Ryan: The most rewarding volunteer experience for me was the four years I spent with the Verona Music Parents Association (VMPA). I served on the board of directors during that time and for two years as co-president. For those who might be unfamiliar with the VMPA the organization plays a crucial role in supporting the activities of the high school music program, with great emphasis on supporting the “Marching Maroon and White”, the chorus and jazz band. The support takes many forms, organizing fund raising and providing crucial logistical support through the efforts of the famous, and in my mind, legendary “pit crew” that is responsible for moving and staging numerous pieces of equipment and instruments for our fabulous marching band and color guard performances.

As volunteer parents you basically sacrificed your entire fall weekends to assist the band at competitions and half time performances at many football games.

I don’t feel there was ever a time over the four years I participated that I ever resented giving up the time. In fact, the satisfaction I got from seeing these young musicians and color guard participants grow and develop and interacting with their parents was truly rewarding. My wife Val ,my son Matt and I still have great affection for the entire Verona music program and the wonderful teachers that influenced his development. He went on to get a Music degree at William Paterson University. He still plays the trombone, owns and manages a music studio in Caldwell and performs in a band , “The Defending Champions”, that play in many local venues. Sorry for the plug but I am a proud parent and just couldn’t help myself.

As I am writing this, the marching band is currently on its annual spring trip. This year they are in Orlando Florida. I hope it will be a great experience.

I was honored that last fall I was asked to present a trophy at the “Verona Festival of Bands” competition. I am not a very sentimental person but being there brought back many fond memories. Another plug, this is one of their main fund raisers. Make plans to attend this year. Great entertainment for a good cause and the food is outstanding!
