Candle3Mr. Jasper L. Powell, 85, died on March 15, 2017 at his home in Verona. Services will be held in the Union Baptist Church, 160 Oakwood Avenue, Orange on Monday, March 20 at 10 a.m. Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and on Monday morning at the Church from 9 to 10 a.m.

Born in Winston Salem, N.C., Mr. Powell lived in East Orange prior to moving to Verona in 1973.

He has a bachelor of arts in Music & Education from Winston Salem University and a master of arts in Administration & Supervision from Kean University.

Mr. Powell taught music and was the band director at Lincoln High School in Jersey City for 30 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma, the Essex Chorale and served as a deacon and trustee of the Union Baptist Church.

He is the beloved husband of Earlene S. Powell, the loving father of Jashana Brown, Sebastian Powell (Abigail) and the dear brother of George Powell, Albertha Williams, Alice Allen, Savannah Johnson and the late Rubye Allaway. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Simone Brown and Amaya Powell, as well as his extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.
