On January 29th, the annual Verona Pack 32 Pinewood Derby races took place at Verona High School, with over 100 participants and spectators cheering on the cars.
Each scout was given a Boy Scouts of America Pinewood Derby kit with a wooden block, 4 wheels and axles, and stickers. Completed cars had to weigh 5oz or less, have BSA wheels, and only use dry lubricants. The block could be cut, shaped and/or sanded before being painted or designed. Cars placed at the top of the track relied on gravity alone to race down the track and across the finish line.
There were 28 racers from the five Pack 32 Dens: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos I and Webelos II. Each den raced each other to determine first, second and third places for their den. A final round of racing consisted of the top fastest cars and resulted in the overall first, second and third place.
This year, Yianni Yanniotis won first place overall; Owen Chanana placed second; and Elliott Ziebert finished third place overall.
This year’s Design category winners are:
Best Display of Scout Spirit: Andrew Conte
Most Patriotic: Jack Fouts
Most Creative: Tyler Casella
Boy Scouts from Verona Troop 2 helped organize check-ins, ensuring cars met qualifications for maximum weight, width and length. The entire pack was grateful for their support.
