Verona High School’s vocal and instrumental talent will be on display once again during the annual Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m.
The VHS Concert Band will perform: “Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa and “Bright Gleams a Beacon” by David Gillingham, both of which the band performed at Rutgers University’s Mid-Atlantic Honors Wind Band Festival in February and the Annual Region I High School Concert Band Festival in March. Other performances include “Hymn for Band” by Hugh Stuart, “Second Suite in F for Military Band” by Gustav Holst, and “Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett.
The VHS Concert Choir will present both classical and popular music, including “No One Is Alone” from the Broadway show “Into the Woods,” “Dies Irae” from Mozart’s “Requiem,” and “Chindia,” a Romanian dance song by Alexandru Pascanu. Special performances include “Something in the Water,” which will feature an accompaniment arranged by one of the VHS seniors, as well as a special song featuring graduating members of the Concert Choir.
The Jazz Vocal Ensemble will perform Kirby Shaw’s arrangement of “Cheek to Cheek,” “I’ll be Seeing You” as arranged by Darmon Meader, who recently hosted a workshop at VHS with the ensemble, and Craig Hella Johnson’s arrangement of “Let the River Run.”
The VHS music program is also hosting two fundraisers: a basket raffle, which will be held onsite at the concert, and the March Madness 50/50 drawing, which is $20/entry for a possible $10,000 prize if all entries are sold. Please contact [email protected] for more information on the 50/50 drawing; the deadline is Monday, May 4.
The Verona High School musicians are directed by Erik Lynch, VHS Concert Band; Amanda Hamilton, VHS Concert Choir; and Judy Szybist, Jazz Vocal Ensemble.
The concert will be held in the Verona High School auditorium, 151 Fairview Avenue. Admission is free.
