The weather report recorded Wednesday as a cold, gray day, but it couldn’t have been brighter on the diamond behind F.N. Brown school: Caroline Chivily recorded her 100th career hit.
The Verona High School senior, who is going on to play for Division III Hamilton College, may well have had her best softball day ever. She was 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBI in the game, which saw Verona defeat Newark Academy, traditionally one of its toughest opponents, 10-4.
Chivily got her career 100th on a single through the gap early in the game, but she wasn’t done. She also recorded her 101st hit with a blast to the outfield for a stand-up triple.
It was a good game all around for VHS. Amber Reed went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while Meghan Yeates was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI and Jackie Selby was 1-for-3 with three runs. Paige Ferrell was on the mound and struck out seven Newark Academy batters while allowing two walks.
The win puts Verona at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in district. Weather permitting, the team travels to Montclair Kimberley Academy this afternoon for a 4 p.m. game.
