Competition was fierce at the annual Pack 32 Pinewood Derby on Friday, January 23 at Verona High School. Thirty-six Cub Scouts from Laning Avenue and Brookdale Avenue elementary schools showcased their custom cars. “I worked with my dad and used lots of hand and power tools, we did most of the work in the garage,” said second place overall winner, Landon Lareau, a Den 6 Wolf.
Scouts cut, sanded and painted their wood block, most creating an aerodynamic design. They then attached wheels and axles. The design and placement of the weight is crucial in a race where cars are propelled by gravity alone. When asked to reveal his winning secret, overall first place winner Anthony Lewis, a Den 2 Bear, initially responded, “no, never,” but did offer this important advice, “make your car thin and put on a clear coat to make it shiny.”
Each car raced a minimum of eight times. “My favorite part was watching the races and seeing all my friends having fun and cheering each other on,” said Elliott Zeibert, a Den 2 Bear who finished third place overall. A jubilant Anthony Lewis added, “it was suspenseful, the suspense was killing me.”
The event was well attended by friends, family and volunteers. Boy Scouts from Verona Troop 2 helped organize check-ins, ensuring cars met qualifications for maximum weight, width and length. The entire pack was grateful for their support. For more information on Verona Cub Scout Pack 32, please e-mail [email protected].
