The Verona High School girls basketball team got its game on in the fourth quarter and delivered a rousing overtime defeat to Emerson High School in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA North 1 Group 1 tournament.
Emerson came into the game as the number 10 seed, and led Verona into the early moments of the final period. (Emerson’s Devin Riker would end up being the high scorer of the game with 19 points.) But Verona kicked into high gear and put up 11 points, ending regulation play in a 30-30 tie. The Maroon and White then strapped on the rockets and delivered 13 points to Emerson’s five, bringing the game to a 43-35 close.
Sarah O’Neil was once again on fire, delivering 18 points for Verona, with Brielle Cummings close behind at 16. Julie Rosenberg was the top rebounder with six.
The semifinals will be Friday in Verona, with a 5 p.m. start. The lady Hillbillies take on number 3 seed Saddle Brook, which is coming off a 61-54 win over 11-ranked Ridgefield. Top-ranked Midland Park hosts Belvidere in the other semifinal match.
