The second of the spring music concerts by students of H.B. Whitehorne takes place tonight, Wednesday, May 15, and there will be something very special on the program: The premiere of a piece of music composed specifically for the middle school and created with help from the students themselves.
In January, noted American composer Joseph Turrin was commissioned to write a piece of music for HBW’s Gold Band. The school’s students were asked to write a poem or short story to inspire Turrin, and the winning poem was written by 8th grade student Cathleen Paluszek. Turrin visited the school several times to work with the band, whose director, Dan Halpern, had won a grant from the Verona Foundation for Education Excellence (VFEE).
This is a preview of “Julibant Overture”, which you can hear tonight in full in the Verona High School auditorium. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
