Movie reviews often come with a “spoiler alert”, a warning that, if you read on, you’re likely to learn a critical detail about the movie’s ending. Let this then be your spoiler alert on the Verona High School wrestling season: If you are sent to the mat against Frankie Greco, you are almost certainly going to lose.
Greco finished last season with a 20-2 record and a trip to the state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City, and he is undefeated in his first four meets this year. At the Bloomfield Tournament on Saturday, he scored an 11-0 decision over David Kowalczyk of Clifton High School and became one of only three Verona wrestlers to take home a trophy that day. For his wrestling achievements, Greco is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
Greco, who has also had an impressive career as a fullback and running back for the Hillbillies, came on the VHS wrestling team in his sophomore year. He had a promising start with seven wins–four of which by pin–and only three losses. Last year, a whole lot more of Greco’s opponents spent time staring at the ceiling lights in the gym. Of his 20 wins, 11 were by pin. This year, Matt Lowerre of Seton Hall Prep and Liam McLaughlin of Whippany Park have already had the same honor. (That’s Greco and McLaughlin in the photo above.) You can catch Greco in action this Friday night, January 4, when the Hillbilly grapplers take on Irvington High School at home at 5 p.m.
During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
