Senior Athlete Of The Week: Robert Maguire

Robert Maguire started playing hockey at age eight and since then he’s logged more miles on ice than a trucker in Alaska. His coaches call him “relentless”, and they intend it as a compliment. The Verona-Glen Ridge hockey team forward and co-captain is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.

Maguire is in his fourth year on VGR, where he has become known as the team’s “grinder”–the guy who does the hard work of setting up the plays. And it has paid off handsomely in past seasons: The team finished 8-4-2 last year and 12-1-1 for 2010-2011.

Hockey is almost a year-round passion for Maguire, who also skates for the Montclair Blues travel team. In the spring, he takes his intensity to Centennial Field to play lacrosse for Verona High School. But you might also see Maguire around town in a different uniform: He’s one of the auxiliary members of the Verona Fire Department.

During the 2012-2013 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
