Branch Brook Park swarmed with dozens of cross country runners on Thursday afternoon and an usual outpouring of dragon flies. But Verona’s boys and girls cross country teams were the ones that really did the flying, coming in with strong wins and strong times for many Verona runners.
The girls won against Nutley (25-32) and St. Vincent (19-40). Melanie Egan, a junior, was the top finisher with a time of 21:02. Senior Marybeth Grund, the team captain, was close behind at 23:11, followed by Sarah Conboy (24:52), Julia Capuano (24:53), Gabi Horton (27:14), Alexandra Smith (28:50), Lara Eremita (28:23) and Maddie Boyle (28:24). The girls are now 7-0 in S.E.C competition.
The boys won against Orange and Shabazz, both by scores of 15-50. Freshman Jim Cuddihy streaked to the finish in 20:53, followed by Matt Carroll (20:56), John Conboy (20:56), Pat Cummings (21:02), Joey Volpe (21:40), Brad Smith (21:42), Dan Stryker (22:12), Nick Celfo (22:30) and Chris Feury (22:32). The boys are 6-0 in SEC competition.
