As a slender young woman, Colleen Carr doesn’t cast much of a physical shadow. But she is most definitely leaving a mark, a mark that earns her the distinction of being this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
In the winter track season, Carr placed fifth in the Super Essex Conference Championship in the high jump. She placed third in the shuttle hurdles in the Essex County Relays and third again in the state Group 1 Relay Championships for the shuttle hurdles.
Carr is in her fourth year in the track program, competing both winter and spring. (The fall is for soccer and Carr was part of the team that made it to the state semi-finals last year). Because of her athletic ability, she has competed in the 55-, 100- and 400-meter hurdles; the high jump, long jump and triple jump; and the 200- and 400-meter relays.
On the field and off, Carr is known for her dedication, enthusiasm and ability to lead. A member of the National Honor Society and an honor student at Verona High School, Carr is also an executive board member of the youth group at Our Lady of the Lake and traveled with it to New Orleans for a rebuilding project there. Most recently, Carr was informed that she would be VHS’ female Essex County scholar athlete.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
