The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Essex County and parts of northern New Jersey for today through late afternoon. Winds could be in excess of 70 mph.

Newark Airport has also issued a warning. The airport says that arrival delays now average 2 hours and 4 minutes. Departure traffic is also experiencing gate holds and runway delays of 1 hour and 45 minutes, which is increasing.

Verona School Superintendent Charles B. Sampson says the district is watching the weather. So check back to see if after-school activities will be affected.
